Working alongside Matter as packaging production partners, Progress were honoured to produce this highly unique decagonal luxury puzzle cask box for world-leading malt whisky specialists, Gordon & MacPhail. This remarkable piece aligns with the finest in whisky packaging, offering a high-end packaging experience that captivates from the moment of unboxing.
Designed to connect with customers, distributors, and retailers of single malt Scotch whiskies and premium spirits across global markets, the puzzle cask redefines the concept of luxury packaging. Matter crafted the 3D brand experience, translating the idea of “unlocking secrets” into a piece of puzzle-solving structural packaging and presentation art.
The cask is constructed with intricate paper-over-board engineering around a central rolled carton, achieving both form and movement in its abstract geometric design. A concealed lock feature in the lid adds an interactive element, requiring precise alignment to access the contents.
The packaging incorporates premium finishes, including foiled lettering and high-build spot gloss varnish, adding visual intrigue and luxurious tactility. Black 2mm board covered in soft-touch paper forms the structure, with all faces foil-blocked in gold and finished with clear UV varnish. Inside, high-density foam and a black-lined tube provide secure housing for the contents, complemented by a card topper and an interlocking lid with foam lining for a seamless fit.

To ensure the puzzle cask arrives in pristine condition, it is nestled within a printed e-flute freight case during transport. This case cradles the cask, ready for unboxing. Introductory text and usage instructions are revealed on the underside of the lid, initiating the packaging experience and user interaction. The custom mailing case, crafted from brown corrugated flute with a two-colour screen print and an internal tray, mirrors the cask’s distinctive shape and adds the final touch to this premium packaging journey.
