Progress have been asked by the University of Huddersfield to do a presentation along with Team Impression and SEA. With me being a former student of the course it will be great to pop back in and hopefully inspire the final year students. Pub lunch anyone? -
Linney Presentation
Liam and Simon were kindly invited by Linney Design Group to do a presentation for their monthly Creative Forum. The hour long get together over breakfast has guest speakers every month and covers all aspects of design, print and production. Hopefully an enjoyable morning was had by all… A big thank you to Phil Thurlby for our invitation and the hard work which goes in to organising the forum each month. Keep up the good work. -
Ridley Scott DVD Cases
We have produced these packs for the last few years for Ridley Scott Associates. The design was cleverly put together by David Pearson in London. David is an expert in print, but specialises in book design and branding.When Rhea Scott from Ridley Scott Associates , asked him to help them design an interchangable showreel case, David was only too happy to help steer them in the right direction and came up with these beautiful sets of cases with 6 different print designs to the outer. After speaking with David about this project, he stipulated that the intial brief he had from RSA was “to ensure the companies showreels not only get in to people’s hands, but they stay in them too”. He was also asked to make sure that the history of RSA, was an important part of the design whilst making sure the pack had modern elements too, to make it stand out from the rest.
David is used to working on book design on a daily basis, but we wondered how he used his knowledge of book branding to help him create a piece of packaging and he gave us this brief insight in to how he came about producing these lovely pieces.
“Much like books, I thought that the cases would need a presence or sense of authority if they were to be cherished by the recipient. If the RSA send out a showreel, they absolutely do not want it to get lost amongst a sea of plastic cases. Therefore, a significant chunk of the budget was used to make these more tactile cases. To further emphasise this approach, a customised belly band is used as the closing device with the individual directors name being hand-stamped on to the front and spine, prior to use. This more serviceable element went some way to offset the cost of the cases, as a rubber stamp costs just a couple of quid. This way, the blank cases and bands don’t need to be replaced once a director leaves the company (or repirnted in one joins). A new stamp is simply ordered and applied. Also, all of RSAs stationary is letterpressed. Although particularly indulgent for such a large scale project, when dealing with such a reduced palette, the smaller details become much more prevalent. Therefore, it felt justifiable to lavish as much attention on these details as possible.”

Design Project Q&A
These acrylic slipcases were made for Corporate Workspace and designed by Design Project. We got in touch with Design Project to see where they get their interesting design ideas from….1) What was the brief from you client?
The brief was quite simply to create a Corporate Workspace branded box to contain sales literature that clients would want to keep on their library shelves.
2) How did you decide on the format of the packaging?
The format was developed through understanding what we could do with the two different acrylics we had selected. We chose not to go down the more standard paper-over-board route, as we felt the kind of brands and products our client promoted demanded a more bespoke and unique solution. As one of the acrylics was glow-edge, we had to engineer the lid to hide the fixings. The final design looks fairly effortless, but in fact involved a great deal of prototyping to get the fit just right.
3) What inspired you to choose the materials that you chose for this project?
We’d already used 3mm glow edge acrylic to produce business cards for this client – the screen printing and laser etching worked so well with the material, we knew it was an obvious starting point. We just increased the weight to 5mm thickness, to make sure the finished box was more rigid.
4) What made you choose to work with Progress for this project?
Friendly, experienced, proactive and a willingness to try something that’s not been done before.
